What's a twaddle free book? And what criteria does she advocate for deciding which books are classics?

twaddle is a a term she coined to mean a book that has been dumbed down. Which really refers to a lot of the educational books out there for kids.

A classic book would be any book that you like, and would be willing to read again and again. So a classic can mean different things to different people.

Make sense?

Do you have an example of a twaddled book? Are you talking about revised fairy tales? Or Dick and Jane type books that use simple language for kids who are learning to read? Or science books that teach simplified science concepts for kids? I guess I don't understand how presenting information at a level that's appropriate for kids is a bad thing. Maybe I don't understand what you mean by "dumbed down."

Also, how do you teach things like advanced math concepts without textbooks?

Thanks. I think this is very interesting especially since the traditional school system worked very well for me. I know it doesn't for everyone so it's interesting to see what other theories are out there.

An example would be abridgments of books. She felt that children can handle the real thing. Many of the websites I linked to explain things very well if you'd like further clarification.

Living Math .net has a wonderful math curriculum, where you are teaching advanced math concepts, and the kids may not even know it.

Many people find that as you present ideas to kids, you can do so on a much higher level than what is normally thought. If they do not get all of it, they usually take something from it, and are more ready for it the next time it comes up.

This is just one educational idea. the websites are great if you want more information, and I will be posting about other ideas in the near future as well.
